How to Open HEIC Files on a Chromebook (School & Work Guide)

Updated: January 2026

It is a common headache for students and teachers: You take a photo of your homework or a whiteboard with your iPhone. You send it to your Chromebook to turn it in, and when you try to open it, you get a generic “File not supported” error.

While Chromebooks are great for web browsing, their simple operating system (ChromeOS) often struggles with Apple’s complex .HEIC image format.

In this guide, we will show you how to view these files on your Chromebook and how to convert them so you can upload them to Google Classroom, Canvas, or Blackboard.

The ChromeOS Limitation

Unlike Windows or Macs, you cannot simply “install a driver” on a Chromebook to make it read new file types. You are limited to what the browser can do.

While Google Photos (the website) can display HEIC files, the built-in “Files” app on many older Chromebooks cannot. This becomes a major problem when you need to upload a file to a specific website that requires a JPG.

The Solution: Convert for Google Classroom & Canvas

If you are trying to submit an assignment, your teacher’s grading software might not be able to open an HEIC file even if you can.

To ensure you get full credit and your teacher can actually see your work, you should always convert your homework photos to JPG before submitting.

🚀 How to Fix Homework Photos:
  1. Open Chrome on your Chromebook.
  2. Go to our Home Page Tool.
  3. Select the photo from your “Downloads” folder.
  4. Download the converted JPG.
  5. Upload that file to Google Classroom, Canvas, or Blackboard.

Using Google Photos on Chromebook?

Many Chromebook users rely on Google Photos to sync pictures from their iPhone. While this lets you see the picture, downloading it to your Chromebook often downloads the original HEIC file.

If you are stuck with a folder of unreadable backups, you need to fix them.

Working on a Presentation?

If you are building a slide deck for class using Google Slides or Microsoft PowerPoint Online, HEIC files often fail to load or show up as broken icons.

For large projects: If you have 20 photos for a science project, do not convert them one by one. Use our Batch Conversion Tool. It runs right in your Chrome browser and processes unlimited files instantly.

Chromebook FAQ

Why is the file extension capitalized (.HEIC)?

Chromebooks are sensitive to file names. Sometimes seeing .HEIC (caps) vs .heic (lowercase) can confuse older systems. Converting to a standard .jpg eliminates this confusion entirely.

Can I use an Android App to open them?

Most modern Chromebooks can run Android apps. You could download an image viewer from the Play Store, but they are often clunky and full of ads. Using a browser-based converter like ours is faster and doesn’t require installing extra software on your school device.

Does this work on school-issued Chromebooks?

Yes. Because our tool does not require you to “install” anything (it runs in the browser), it works even on school computers that block software installations. Plus, it is safe because your photos never leave the device.
