How to Convert HEIC to JPG on Mac (Fastest Methods)
Updated: January 2026
Mac users often live in a bubble. On your MacBook or iMac, HEIC files look great. You can click them, edit them, and view them in Preview without any issues.
The problem starts the moment that file leaves your computer.
You email it to a colleague on Windows, and they can’t open it. You upload it to a website, and it breaks. In this guide, we will show you the fastest ways to turn your Mac-native photos into universal JPGs that work everywhere.
Method 1: The Instant “Drag & Drop” (Recommended)
While macOS has built-in tools, they require a lot of clicking (File > Export > Select Format > Save). If you just want to get the file done and move on, a web tool is faster.
- Open Safari or Chrome on your Mac.
- Go to our Home Page Tool.
- Drag the file from Finder directly onto the webpage.
- Download the JPG immediately.
Bonus: This is the best way to handle Batch Conversions if you have 50+ files to process at once.
Method 2: Using the “Preview” App
If you are offline or prefer using built-in software, you can use Apple’s “Preview” app. It is powerful, but slightly tedious for single files.
- Double-click your HEIC file to open it in Preview.
- In the top menu bar, click File > Export.
- In the “Format” dropdown menu, change HEIC to JPEG.
- Adjust the “Quality” slider (we recommend roughly 80%).
- Click Save.
Note: While this works fine for one photo, it becomes very slow if you are trying to export an entire vacation album.
Why Do I Need to Convert if I Have a Mac?
You aren’t converting the file for you. You are converting it for everyone else.
1. For Windows Users
Most offices run on Windows. If you email an HEIC file to a PC user, they often see a broken attachment. Be professional and send a JPG.
(Read more: What Windows Users See When You Send HEIC).
2. For Web Uploads
If you run a blog or manage social media, you cannot upload HEIC files to WordPress, Slack, or Discord without causing errors.
(Read more: Fixing WordPress Upload Errors).
Method 3: “Quick Actions” (For Advanced Users)
If you are technically inclined, macOS allows you to set up a “Quick Action” in the Automator app to convert images with a right-click.
However, setting this up involves creating a script and modifying system services. For most users, simply bookmarking a fast online converter is much easier than programming your operating system.
Mac User FAQ
Does AirDrop convert HEIC to JPG automatically?
Sometimes. If you AirDrop to another Apple device (like an iPad), it stays HEIC. If you AirDrop to a Mac, it usually stays HEIC. You only get a JPG if you share via a non-Apple method (like email), but even that is inconsistent.
Why are my screenshots .PNG but my photos .HEIC?
By default, macOS saves screenshots as PNG (for text clarity), while iPhones save camera photos as HEIC (for compression). Both formats cause issues on certain websites. Our tool converts both HEIC and PNG to standard JPG.
Can I change my Mac to take JPG screenshots?
Yes, but it requires using the Terminal command line. It is generally safer to leave your system defaults alone and convert files only when you need to share them.
